The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) offers an outstanding Engineer-in-Training (EIT) program with exciting and diverse career opportunities. You will join other graduates in a comprehensive “hands-on” training program designed to provide you with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to become an accomplished engineer in today's complex engineering environment.

Our EIT program lasts approximately 4 - 5 years, depending on your previous work experience. During that time, you will be rotated between all of the departments (Materials, Construction, Design, Traffic, Operations, etc.) in one of six Administrative Districts as well as at Headquarters in Boise, ID. Typical rotations last approximately 6 months.

In addition to obtaining "on-the-job" exposure, ITD supplements your development with training courses. The knowledge and training received throughout the EIT program more than adequately provides you with the professional engineering experience needed to meet Idaho’s Professional Engineering (PE) licensing requirements. Each EIT is also assigned a mentor to provide support and additional insight into the engineering industry. EITs are also given ample opportunities to interact with senior personnel, both through work and social activities.
