ITD Projects Southwest Idaho I-84 Caldwell Franklin Interchange

I-84 Caldwell Franklin Interchange

Project Facts
Key Number: 7795
Project Number: NH-84-104329

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) reconstructed the Franklin Road Interchange to improve access to Caldwell from I-84, improve traffic flow, and ease congestion. The existing Franklin Road Overpass was rebuilt as a six-lane bridge. All four interchange ramps were widened at their intersection with Franklin Road, and Franklin Road itself was widened.

Project Background
The first Caldwell interchange on I-84 opened in 1966. Since then, interchange traffic has grown to 17,700 vehicles every day. In the next 20 years, that number is expected to nearly double.

Construction on the project began in December 2006. A ceremony to celebrate the completion of the project and official opening was held July 8, 2008.

Project Description
The reconstruction improved several aspects of the interchange:
  • The old three-lane Franklin Overpass was replaced with a six-lane bridge. The new overpass has two through lanes in each direction and dual left-turn lanes in each direction.
  • The interchange ramps were lengthened and widened to two lanes at their intersection with Franklin.
  • Franklin Road was widened from two to five lanes between the overpass and Specht Avenue. The improved road has curb, gutter, sidewalk, bicycle lanes and shoulder.
  • Aviation Way was widened at the intersection with Franklin Road. A new traffic signal was added.
Concrete Placing Co. was the contractor for the $25 million project.
