2012 Road Maintenance
2012 Road Maintenance
Road maintenance projects consist of sealcoats, rut filling, asphalt overlays, and mill/overlay processes. Following is an explanation of each type of maintenance process:
- Sealcoat – an application of liquid asphalt to an existing asphalt roadway then coated with gravel chips.
- Micro-sealcoat – essentially same as sealcoat, but premixed and applied as slurry to an asphalt surface.
- Rut filling – also known as a scrub coat, consists of a thin layer of plantmix asphalt about an inch deep; often used to level an existing roadway prior to a seal coat or overlay.
- Thin-lift asphalt overlay – a layer of plantmix asphalt between one and two inches deep applied to an existing roadway.
- Regular-lift asphalt overlay – a layer of plantmix asphalt between two and five inches deep applied directly to an existing roadway and often followed by a sealcoat.
- Mill and inlay/overlay – Milling consists of grinding off to two inches of existing asphalt roadway to remove rutting, cracks and inconsistencies of the surface. Followed by inlay paving to bring the roadway back to level and is often followed by a full-width overlay.
