Project Facts

Project Number: A009(822) & A013(812)
Key Number: 09822 & 13812
MP 55.12-57.35

The Idaho Transportation Department will replace the I-84, Gowen Road interchange in Boise. A third level will be added in each direction on I-84 between the Broadway Avenue and Gowen Road interchanges. The project will reduce congestion, enhance safety and improve traffic flow.

The new design for the interchange will include:

  • Dual left-turn lanes for the westbound I-84 on-ramp.
  • Three through eastbound lanes and two through westbound lanes on Gowen Road.
  • Adding a signal at the westbound off-ramp.
  • Curb, gutter, sidewalks and bicycle lanes on I-84.
  • Longer, wider I-84 on- and off-ramps.

In addition to the Gowen Road Interchange reconstruction, ITD will be replacing the Broadway Avenue Interchange in Boise and the Meridian Road Interchange in Meridian. For more information, click here.

Background

This project is a result of an Environmental Assessment and a planning study for I-84 from just west of the Orchard Interchange to the Isaacs Canyon Interchange (Eisenman Road). The interstate, built in the late 1960s, was not designed to handle the current traffic volumes. The study recommended improvements for this corridor, including replacing the existing pavement, adding lanes to the interstate, installation of soundwalls, and reconstructing the Orchard, Vista, Broadway, and Gowen interchanges to meet future traffic capacity requirements.

ITD received environmental approval for this project from the Federal Highway Administration in November 2007. For more information about the Environmental Assessment, click here.
