Hailey’s Safe Routes to School coordinator initially focused on the drop-off/pick-up location at
Hailey Elementary School. He assisted the school in creating a temporary pull through drop-off lane
at the school's visitor parking area. Given limited funding and space for a permanent facility,
they are coordinating a volunteer effort to greet drivers, open doors and expedite a quick flow of
traffic. The old method was unsafe and created grid-lock. The motivation for the change was to create
a safer school zone. The end result—a smoother traffic flow—has enhanced pedestrian and bicycle circulation
at the school entrance. A successful SR2S program requires attention to all 4-E's (education, encouragement,
engineering, enforcement) so the program is now refocusing on the neighborhood programs aimed at increasing
the number students who walk and bike to school.
