Q and A on the Safe Routes to School -- USA website

Q – When will Idaho’s Safe Routes to School program be finalized?

A (as of 9/21/05) – On October 1, 2003, the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) expired. Over the next 21 months Congress passed twelve “extensions” of TEA-21. In August 2005, Congress voted to reauthorize TEA-21, calling the new bill the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act – A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA—LU) and President Bush signed it into law on August 10, 2005. As anticipated, SAFETEA—LU contains a Safe Routes to School program. Facts sheets on the bills various programs can be found at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/safetealu/factsheets.htm. SR2S funding for fiscal year 2005 will be rolled into fiscal year 2006 (October 1, 2005 through September 30, 2006.) Idaho’s Safe Routes to School Statewide Advisory Committee has been meeting since June of 2004 and is currently working to implement Idaho’s SR2S program.
