Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP)

If you are required to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, you must develop a SWPPP. Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans are prepared to ensure all necessary steps have been taken to prevent soil erosion, keep stormwater discharges from picking up sediment and/or pollutants, and managing them on-site.

A well written SWPPP is specific to the site. At a minimum a SWPPP must:

  • Identify all potential sources of pollution which may affect the quality of storm water discharges
  • Describe how storm water could transport these materials
  • Describe control measures to reduce pollutants in storm water discharges
  • Set up procedures to monitor effectiveness of control measures
  • Specify steps to be taken if problems are discovered
