Welcome to the Idaho Transportation Department's Winter Driving Web site. This site provides information about the transportation department's efforts to keep Idaho's highway system safe and clear during the snow season. The site consists of:

  • Winter Response Overview: This page explains how ITD prepares for the snow season and how it decides the order that roads should be cleared.
  • Anti-Icing: This technique is seeing increasing use with ITD. Find out why at this page.
  • Winter Driving Checklist: Is your vehicle ready for winter? Do you have what you need in case of an emergency? Find out on this page.
  • Winter Driving Tips: This page explains why accident rates go up in the winter, and what you can do to avoid them.
  • Idaho Road Report Poster: This downloadable PDF file includes road report hot lines and web addresses for Idaho and surrounding states, weather information and Idaho State Police regional phone numbers. Post this in your office or home. 
     
  • Studded Snow Tires: Snowstorms may not be part of the immediate weather forecast, but Oct. 1 marks the date for legal use of studded snow tires in Idaho.
