ITD U.S. 95, Payette River Bridge, South of Payette
Project Facts
Key number: 02842 Project number: BRF-3112(050) Project Facts
This project is located on U.S. 95 between the cities of Fruitland and Payette (mileposts 66.01 - 66.55) in Payette County. U.S. 95 is the main route connecting north and south Idaho. About 18,000 vehicles use this portion of the highway daily and by 2026 the volume is expected to be 25,390.Project Description
ITD proposes to replace the metal truss bridge, which carries the northbound lane of U.S. 95. The bridge, built in 1927, is in poor condition and does not meet current national standards – vertical clearance is 15 feet which is 2 feet lower than required on new structures.
The proposed new bridge would be constructed between the existing southbound and northbound bridges. It is recommended that the new bridge be attached to the existing southbound bridge. Together the bridges will meet current width standards and eliminate the existing safety concerns. It will also eliminate the need for parapet and guardrail between north and southbound traffic. As part of this project, the existing northbound truss bridge would be removed to allow enough room for the new structure to be constructed. The existing southbound bridge would be modified by constructing a thicker deck to match the new side of the bridge and to increase the load rating. A five-foot-wide at-grade sidewalk is proposed for both sides of the bridge. The total width of the new bridge and the width between curbs would be 95.5 feet and 78 feet, respectively. All work would be done within the existing right of way. A right turn lane is proposed for Killebrew drive. A 14-foot center turn lane is proposed for Killebrew drive, Alden Road and two approaches on the southwest side of the bridge. The project is expected to take 21 months: 12 months for new bridge construction; three months for re-decking the existing bridge, three months to remove the truss bridge, and three months for roadwork. Project History
A public information meeting was held at Fruitland City Hall on April 10, 2001. Since then meetings have been held with local agencies (police, sheriff and engineering departments) and with a local pedestrian/bicycle pathway group. Some recommendations from the public were:
