The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is performing design work for a new highway extending Idaho 16 from U.S. 20/26 (Chinden Blvd) to Idaho 44 (State Street). This project will require a new Boise River crossing and a connection with Idaho 44 across undeveloped property.

The new highway will provide a north-south connection in the Treasure Valley between US-20/26 (Chinden Blvd) and SH-44 (State St). It is the first step toward extending Idaho 16 south from its intersection with Idaho 44 to connect with I-84.

The project will include:

• New four-lane highway from U.S. 20/26 to Idaho 44.
• Bridges across the Boise River and Phyllis Canal.
• At grade signalized intersections at US-20/26 and SH-44
• Access consolidation and new local roads

An environmental study began in 2006 to locate the new extension of Idaho 16. The study produced an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) that identifies the alignment. Click here to learn more about this study.

Final design and right-of-way are scheduled for completion in August 2011.

Right-of-way is expected to be complete by October 2011.

The Record of Decision was approved by FHWA on April 14, 2011. At this time, construction is expected to begin in January 2012.

This project is funded through the GARVEE Transportation Program. Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds allow the accelerated construction of critical highway and bridge projects throughout the state of Idaho. Design & right-of-way are funded through prior year authorizations. Under the 2011 legislation session, addition funding has been authorized for construction of this project.
