Eagle Road Improvement Project

Project Facts
Key No. 12044

Project Description

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is designing improvements to Eagle Road from Franklin Road to State Street. The improvements include:

  • Repaving the roadway
  • Adding continuous raised medians from Franklin Road to just north of Chinden Blvd
  • Updating pedestrian curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements
These projects are scheduled to start in June 2012, and be completed by early November 2012.

Project Background

The Idaho Transportation Department began the Eagle Road Arterial Study in 2003. The purpose of the study was to determine how to increase safety, manage traffic more efficiently and improve Eagle Road's appearance to create a parkway feel between the Interstate 84 off-ramps and Idaho 44 (State Street).

The study included extensive public involvement, from large public open houses to small group meetings. The input consistently reflected the public's desire to improve traffic flow, safety and look of the corridor. The people who participated in this process represented the diverse community that Eagle Road serves — businesses, residents, city leaders and commuters.

In February 2004, ITD solicited three nationally recognized companies to help with the technical analysis of Eagle Road. These experts offered additional information in determining the best management of Eagle Road. A three-day workshop was held to discuss how to increase safety, manage traffic and make Eagle Road more attractive. Participants included the cities of Boise, Meridian and Eagle, Ada County, Ada County Highway District, Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho and the Federal Highway Administration.

The project moved into the design phase in 2005 and was renamed the Eagle Road Improvement Project. Several improvements have been made to Eagle Road. Since 2006, ITD has completed the following projects:

  • Widened Eagle Road from I-84 off-ramp to Franklin Road and installed a continuous raised median (2006)
  • Added a signal at Hobble Creek (2006)
  • Rebuilt and widened the Eagle Road westbound off-ramp (2007)
  • Upgraded the signal coordination and detection system from Overland Road to State Street (2008)
  • Rehabilitated the pavement from eastbound off-ramps to Fairview Avenue (2010)

This project completes the improvements currently planned and funded for the Eagle Road Arterial Study.
