The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and City of Kimberly have joined forces to plan, design and install a new traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Idaho 50 on the north end of Kimberly (locally known as Red Cap Corner).

The intersection of U.S. 30 and Idaho 50 has been near the top of the ITD High Accident Location (HAL) list for the number of and potential for high-speed accidents. The original concept to install a traffic signal was enhanced to provide for improved turn lanes for the anticipated 20-year traffic volume increase and to accommodate a fire department access located near the intersection.

The addition of the traffic signal will increase the traffic safety in the affected intersection by allowing for controlled turning movements of vehicles onto U.S. 30 west-bound. The signal will also control east-west traffic from Idaho 50 (east leg) and U.S. 30 (west leg) as well as south bound traffic on 3500 East Road.

Included in intersection improvements will be a realigned free-running right turn lane for east-bound U.S. 30 toward Kimberly. The traffic signal will incorporate an advanced warning detection system with flashing beacons to allow additional time for higher speed traffic to slow.

The U.S. 30/Idaho 50 intersection improvements are expected to begin construction in June of 2013. Idaho Sand & Gravel of Jerome is the contractor for the $717,600 project.
