Shoshone North, Idaho 75 Project

Project Facts
Key Number: 7699
Project Number: STP-2390(131)

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is proposing a major widening and re-alignment of Idaho75 from the city of Shoshone to Thorn Creek Road (mileposts 74-82).

Project Background
In the late 1990s, ITD considered improvements to Idaho 75 north of Shoshone to Timmerman Hill to increase traffic capacity and improve safety. Engineers determined that only the first eight miles of roadway north of Shoshone needed significant improvements. The remaining 20 miles are adequate to safely handle existing traffic.

Reduced funding will extend the planning and construction schedule into multiple phases. The first phase, with construction expected to begin in late 2009, will build new bridges and one lane in each direction through the proposed corridor. Funding will determine scheduling of subsequent phases.

Project Description
When phase one is complete, the project on Idaho 75 (milepost 74-82) will:

  • Construct 2 lanes to the east of the existing roadway including five-foot shoulders to improve safety.
  • Construct new bridges at Milner-Gooding Canal, Big Wood River and North Gooding Canal.
  • Add a Port of Entry pullout at milepost 76.
With the completed design, approximately 50 feet of additional privately-owned land right of way will be needed. Negotiations of right of way purchases are currently underway.

Construction of the project will be done in phases. The first phase is scheduled to begin in the fall/winter of 2009 with construction of the new bridges and new roadway to milepost 82.

An Environment Assessment (EA) approved by the Federal Highway Administration in August, 2006. The document can be accessed at the Idaho Transportation Department District Four office in Shoshone.
