The Idaho Transportation Department resumed work in early April on the repair and maintenance of Interstate 15 in eastern Idaho. This multi-year endeavor began in 2017.

The 2018 construction season will involve numerous bridge improvements, new pavement and guardrail in several locations between the Utah and Montana borders.

Spencer to Dubois

ITD will reconstruct 8.3 miles of Interstate 15 between the towns of Spencer and Dubois in southeast Idaho. Moisture accumulation and thawing has resulted in deterioration of the pavement and supportive base layers beneath the interstate.

Traffic impacts:
• Both north- and southbound traffic will travel on the same side of I-15.
• The speed limit will be reduced.
• Crews will work six days a week.

Work in 2018 will include:
• Removal of existing pavement, and adding a drainable base layer on top of existing sub-layers.
• Resurfacing the pavement to provide a new smooth surface.
• Improving the shoulders and edge drains.
• Replacing rumble strips and upgrading guardrail.

Construction Update – Inkom Bridges

Maintenance work is resuming on several bridges in Inkom. Improvements include:
• South Inkom Interchange overpass (southbound lanes)
• Rapid Creek Bridge (southbound lanes)
• Main Street Bridge

Traffic impacts:
• Interstate 15 will be reduced to one lane in each direction in the project area.
• Both north- and southbound interstate traffic will travel on the same side of I-15.
• The South Inkom Interchange westbound ramp will be closed on occasion.
• The speed limit will be reduced.

This project began in 2017 and includes making repairs and replacing guardrail along the bridges. These bridges were built in the 1960s and are showing signs of wear.

Arimo to McCammon Bridges

ITD is repairing five bridges on Interstate 15 between Arimo and McCammon. The majority of these bridges were constructed in the 1960s and 70s. The repairs will protect the structural integrity of the bridges for many years.

The bridges include:
• Merrill Road (Exit 47)
• Robin Road
• Jensen Road (Exit 44)
• Virginia Road (Exit 36)

Traffic impacts:
• I-15 will be reduced to one lane in each direction in the project area.
• Both north- and southbound traffic will travel on the same side of I-15.
• Local roads may be reduced to one lane with flaggers.
• Overnight work on Merrill Road will occur from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

McCammon to Inkom

ITD will repave nine miles of Interstate 15 between McCammon and Inkom.

Traffic impacts:
• I-15 will be reduced to one lane in each direction in the project area.
• Both north- and southbound traffic will travel on the same side of I-15.
• The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.

The project includes:
• Replacing 8 inches of cracked pavement and eliminating soft spots under the surface.
• Upgrading guardrail throughout the project area.
• Repairing Portneuf Bridges near Inkom.

Rose Road Interchange

The Idaho Transportation Department is reconstructing the Rose Road Interchange.

Improvements to the interchange include:
• Widening the Rose Road bridge that crosses over I-15.
• Increasing the height of the overpass to better accommodate freight vehicles on I-15.
• Reconfiguring and enhancing the on- and off-ramps.
• Replacing two canal structures south of Rose Road to meet current load weights.

Sand Road MapThe Sand Road to South Blackfoot project was completed in late May 2018 and all lanes of I-15 in this area are open to traffic. Nearly four miles of northbound Interstate 15 between Sand Road and South Blackfoot were repaved.

Improvements include:
• Replacing 9.6 inches of cracked pavement and eliminating soft spots under the surface.
• Upgrading guardrail throughout the project area.
• Rebuilding the vertical clearance under the Sand Road Overpass, Ferry Butte Road Overpass and Willie Road Overpass.

In 2017, ITD’s improvements to Interstate 15 resulted in 157 lane miles of new pavement, repairs to 11 bridges and replacing over 62,000 feet of guardrail.

I-15: Spencer to Montana State Line ProjectCOMPLETE: I-15 Spencer to Montana State Line Project

ITD resurfaced 15.3 miles of Interstate 15 between Spencer, Idaho, and the Montana state line in the summer of 2017. The project included repaving ramps and cross-streets at the Stoddard Creek Interchange and Humphry Interchange (exits 184 and 190).

I-15 Osgood Exit Ramp Construction MapCOMPLETE: I-15 Osgood Exit Ramp Project

The Idaho Transportation Department reconstructed three of the ramps at the I-15, Osgood Interchange (Exit 128). The Osgood Interchange is located north of Idaho Falls.

The project included:
• Replacing the northbound on-ramp and both southbound ramps.
• Realigning the ramps to improve sight distance.
• Upgrading guardrail.

I-15_ID-Falls_MapCOMPLETE: I-15 Idaho Falls Bridges Project

The Idaho Transportation Department completed maintenance work on three bridges that cross I-15 north of Idaho Falls. The bridges are located at:
• 81st North (Payne Road)
• 113th North (Shattock ButteRoad)
• 200 North (McCarty Road)

The work included replacing guardrail, repairing concrete and resurfacing the bridge decks. The project will extend the life of the bridges for many years to come.

COMPLETE: I-15 Lava Beds to the Bonneville County Line Project

Approximately eight miles of Interstate 15 from the Lava Beds (near the rest area) to the Bonneville County line was resurfaced.

COMPLETE: I-15 Southbound-Sand Road to South Blackfoot Interchange

The Idaho Transportation Department resurfaced 3.6 miles of southbound Interstate 15 between the Sand Road overpass and the South Blackfoot Interchange.

• ITD will return next spring to resurface northbound I-15 between Sand Road and South Blackfoot Interchange.

I-15_Ft_Hall_mapCOMPLETE: I-15 Fort Hall to Burns Road Resurfacing

Approximately six miles of Interstate 15 from the Fort Hall Reservation boundary near Pocatello to Burns Road north of Fort Hall was resurfaced. Along with resurfacing, ITD upgraded the guardrail along I-15 and improved the clearance below the structures at the Railroad Overpass, Fort Hall Interchange and Sheepskin Road.

• Rehabilitate the Fort Hall Main Canal bridges once the canal is dry. All work to be complete in fall 2017.

COMPLETE: I-15 Pocatello Bridges Project

Several bridges on Interstate 15 in Pocatello were rehabilitated. The bridge work preserved the structures and repaired and prevented deterioration. Guardrail along the bridges was upgraded.

COMPLETE: Several northbound bridges on Interstate 15 in Inkom were rehabilitated in 2017.

• The southbound bridges work in Inkom will begin in the Spring 2018.

I-15_McCammon-mapCOMPLETE: I-15 Arimo to McCammon Project

The Idaho Transportation Department resurfaced approximately seven miles of Interstate 15 from Arimo to McCammon.

Arimo McCammon

Along this project route the interstate road surface was deteriorating and needed to be replaced. The work eliminated rough sections and soft spots on the road. ITD also upgraded the guardrail on I-15. Through a method called Cold-in-Place Recycling, ITD reused the old pavement in the new roadway. This method helped to reduce waste and lower costs.
