Current traffic impacts
ITD began work on the South Jerome Interchange in February 2024. Sign up for updates to receive construction information directly to your inbox.
Right now, motorists can expect:
- Flaggers will intermittently direct traffic on local roads. Flagging will occur on Lincoln Avenue, Bob Barton Road and E Frontage Road N from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and business access is expected to remain open. Motorists can expect up to 15 minute delays.
- Intermittent I-84 lane closures will occur for the duration of the project. For the next few months, daytime lane closures may occur as crews work on the new Lincoln Avenue bridges.
What to expect during construction:
- Most work will occur Monday – Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Intermittent nighttime closures on I-84 will be necessary for bridge work, girder placement and traffic shifts.
- Lane closures, traffic shifts and ramp changes will occur.
- Local road closures will occur and detours will be in place.
- Speed limits will be reduced.

Project overview
In 2024, crews began work to replace the South Jerome Interchange. The interchange was originally built in 1966, and it has reached the end of its design life. The new interchange will be a Divided Diamond/Couplet design.
The new design will:
- Replace aging structures to meet current standards.
- Improve safety by reducing the impact of the frontage roads on the on- and off-ramps.
- Improve traffic flow by installing new traffic signals.
- Add sidewalks and bike lanes to the Lincoln Avenue bridges.

Frequently Asked Questions
The I-84 South Jerome Interchange was originally built in 1966, and it has reached the end of its design life. The new design will prepare the interchange to serve South-Central Idaho for years to come.
The new interchange was designed to meet traffic needs for the next 20+ years.
It will do this by:
- Reducing the impact of frontage roads on interchange ramps.
- Adding traffic signals that will maximize traffic flow and improve safety.
The Divided Diamond/Couplet design will improve safety, accommodate pedestrian and bicycle travel and increase traffic flow on I-84, Bob Barton Road and E Frontage Road N. This design was selected from over two dozen alternatives because it best meets each of these project goals.
Construction began in February 2024 and is expected to be completed in November 2026.
