Data Types
Volume, length, classification, speed data is collected at prescribed locations around Idaho on state highway and non-state highway roadways. With approximately 280 continuous counters, and around 2,000 short duration counts performed each year, the traffic monitoring program (part of the Roadway Data unit) provides foundational information for describing the usage of Idaho’s roads. The data collected aids in providing growth, monthly, day of week, peak hour, and a host of other factors on Idaho’s roads.
Products and Tools
There is a broad range of annual, monthly and specialty publications and tools available for viewing traffic data. Data and Maps provides links to resources to visualize data that has been collected and published. This includes detailed data in an interactive application, the annualized data in a GIS map, an interactive chart/map of continuous count information updated monthly. Meanwhile the Traffic Projection Tool provides links to the traffic projection form and instructions on its use.

Data Collection Methodology
ITD maintains continuous count devices on many of Idaho’s roadways. During the month of April – mid-November, ITD personnel collect short duration counts (typically 24-48 hour counts) on state highways and non-state federal aid eligible roadways around Idaho. Continuous count data is uploaded to the interactive traffic data management system (MS2) daily, while short duration counts are loaded typically within 2 weeks of counts being performed.
Mission
The mission of the Roadway Data Section is to provide efficient collection, analysis, reporting, and retention of valid statewide traffic data. We do this by providing accurate and timely information to ITD, the public, the private sector, and other governmental agencies. We also manage traffic-related databases, locate, design, and build our own traffic counting sites statewide, and integrate computer-assisted analysis with technical support.
