Overview
In 2025, the Idaho Transportation Department and its construction partner Wadsworth Brothers Construction began reconstruction of Interstate 15 in Bannock County, in and near the city of Inkom. Corridor roadway and bridge improvements include:
-
- Replacing I-15 bridges over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks and Old Highway 91.
-
- Replacing I-15 bridges over Rapid Creek Road (Main Street).
-
- Replacing I-15 bridges and reconstructing West Interchange.
ITD combined and streamlined the projects, reducing the construction timeline to approximately two years. This approach minimizes disruption to the local community and traveling public and supports efficient use of construction funds.
Traffic impacts include crossovers, reduced speed limits, and single-lane opposing traffic. Motorists should exercise caution while driving through the construction zone.
Construction Updates
UPDATE: March 18, 2026
Old Highway 91 under the Interstate 15 bridges in Inkom will close from March 19 through July 24 to allow crews to continue replacing the bridges in town. During the closure, traffic will be detoured along North Rapid Creek Road and North Inkom Road.
March 6, 2026
Earlier this week the Idaho Transportation Department resumed work on Interstate 15 in Inkom as part of a multi-year effort that began last year to replace the I-15 bridges over Main Street, Rapid Creek Road and the Union Pacific Railroad.
Last year the three southbound bridges were replaced. This year crews will focus on the northbound bridges, with all work to be completed in late October 2026.
Beginning Monday, I-15 traffic will be crossed over to one lane in each direction on the southbound lanes.
The following closures will be in effect in the coming weeks:
- March 8–12: West Inkom Interchange (Exit 58) northbound on-ramp will close nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to Portneuf Area Exit (Exit 63) via Old Highway 91.
- March 13–16: Main Street and North Rapid Creek Road under I-15 will close nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Traffic will be detoured via Old Highway 91 and North Inkom Road.
Motorists should watch for workers, use caution, and drive safely through the work zone.
