The Idaho Transportation Department will shift southbound Interstate 15 traffic into new lanes north of Chubbuck this Sunday, prompting ramp closures this weekend. This shift marks a major milestone in the project to widen I-15 between Pocatello and Fort Hall.
Traffic will be shifted from north of the 2 ½ Mile Road Bridge to the Chubbuck Road Bridge. Motorists can expect:
- Intermittent nighttime I-15 lane closures will occur from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights.
- The southbound ramps at the Northgate Interchange (Exit 73) will close from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday for crews to connect them to the new lanes. Southbound off-ramp users will detour to the Chubbuck Interchange (Exit 61). View a detour map. Southbound on-ramp users will detour to the Chubbuck and Pocatello Creek Road interchanges (Exits 61 and 71). View a detour map.
- Nighttime speed limits will be reduced to 55 miles per hour.
- Two lanes will remain open in each direction during the daytime.
Begun in 2025, the $200 million Northgate to Fort Hall project is expanding I-15 to three lanes in each direction. This expansion will reduce congestion and improve safety along I-15. Work is scheduled to be completed in 2027.
The safety of motorists and construction crews is ITD’s top priority during construction. When driving through the work zone, please stay alert for traffic changes, follow work zone signage and drive the posted speed limit.
