ITD Career Paths
ITD has over 150 job classifications, offering a variety of career options. Below is information about positions we hire for most frequently.
The primary responsibility of the Transportation Technician, Operations (TTO) position is to maintain the roadways for the State of Idaho. This includes plowing snow, monitoring weather and weather patterns, construction inspection, maintenance of road drainage, bridge maintenance, and heavy equipment operations.
TTOs are transportation professionals motivated to deliver safety, mobility, and economic opportunity for the traveling public by preserving, repairing, and restoring a system of roadways. The Transportation Technician Apprentice is the first step in the 3-5 year horizontal career path for the TTO.
This position requires that you obtain a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 60 days of hire. ITD will provide training to meet the Entry Level Driver Training requirements as well as licensing costs.
Port-of-Entry positions inspect commercial vehicles and enforce compliance with laws and regulations governing commercial vehicle traffic at various ITD Port-of-Entry locations throughout Idaho. Upon completion of the probationary period, passing of the inspector trainee test, and completion of one full year of service as an inspector trainee, the trainee will be promoted to Inspector classification.
Engineering positions are part of the Technical Engineering Services Lead (TESL) Horizontal Career Path. Through on-the-job training, classroom training, achievement of team goals and agency goals, there will be opportunity to progress through the appropriate steps. Applicants can enter at either the Engineer Intern or Staff Engineer levels with appropriate certification or licensure.
TESL engineers are considered fully competent professional engineers, capable of performing all the conventional aspects for engineering of the functional areas of responsibility of the discipline involved. Candidates will be expected to independently evaluate, select, and adapt situations, and modify techniques, procedures, and criteria to solve problems encountered.
Mechanic positions are responsible for repairing and maintaining heavy-duty road maintenance and construction equipment and light-duty vehicles in accordance with federal and state motor vehicle regulations. The ideal candidates will be experienced mechanics with knowledge of diagnostic, maintenance and repair techniques for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
ITD has created an opportunity for employees hired into the Mechanic classification to advance to the Equipment Technician, Transportation classification upon completion of a customized training plan. We anticipate that Mechanics new to ITD will be able to complete this training plan within 2 years.

ITD has created horizontal career paths in order to create high caliber technicians and better career advancement opportunities for our employees. This career path starts at the Transportation Technician Senior level and provides an opportunity to be a part of a variety of public infrastructure development projects in a region that has a rapidly changing landscape. With ITD’s horizontal career path you will be able to gain experience in developing and designing highway construction projects. You will also Inspect, observe and ensure a construction project is constructed in accordance with contract plans and specifications.
