An Idaho license plate that says Idaho on it.

Idaho’s standard license plate is the red, white and blue scenic Idaho plate. Standard plates cost $3.75 per plate. All plates regardless of design are good for 10 years with active registration. The standard plate includes a “county designator” in the plate number that corresponds with the county you live in.

License plates are made to order and are shipped by the US Postal Service. Please allow 6 weeks for new plates to arrive. You can track your plate order in the DMV Online Portal. Don’t put your registration tags on an old plate if you recently ordered a new one.

Idaho also offers personalized plates and special plate designs that are available for an additional cost.

Personalized Plates

Personalized plates are plates with a combination of numbers and letters that you select. Personalizing a plate comes with an additional cost on top of the regular plate and registration fees.

You can use them on passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and some recreational vehicles. Not all plate types can be ordered online.

Vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds are not eligible for personalized plates.

Guidelines:

  • Your requested plate combination is subject to review.
  • The maximum number of characters you can use depends on the plate type you want to register. A character is a letter, number, or a space. Each space counts as one character.
  • Must be tasteful (in any language)
  • Must contain at least one character. The letter O and the number zero look the same on a license plate, therefore only the number zero will be accepted.
  • Cannot contain any punctuation or special characters.
  • Must not already be in use.

If you allow the registration on your personalized plates to expire, the combination will become immediately available for reissue to another applicant.

The full list of rules for special plates can be found in Idaho Administrative Code 39.02.60 202.08 on page 9 (PDF)

Personalized plate fees

$25 initial Personalization Program Fee ($15 additional per registration year). Not all plates can be personalized. You can personalize some special plates for an extra fee on top of the specialty plate cost and regular registration fee.

Special Plates

Idaho offers over 40 special plates with unique designs for an additional cost. Fees collected from special plate sales go to a variety of causes like educational initiatives, farm research, recreation, conservation and more.

Ordering a special plate

Some special plates, including disabled plates and military plates, require additional documentation to order. Some plates can be ordered online, but some require you to order in person or by mail.

Disability plates and placards

If you need to order a disability plate or placard, you and a licensed medical provider need to complete the Disability License Plates and Placards Form (PDF) and return it to ITD.
