Quick Resources
Request your Driver Record
You can request a driver license record (DLR) from the Idaho Transportation Department. You must provide the following information:
- A written request along with driver information and a $7.00 fee (per record requested). The record can be certified for an additional $14.00 fee.
- Four identifiers are used to select the proper record–at least two must match to get a successful “hit” using the following; NAME, DRIVER’S LICENSE NUMBER, SSN, DATE OF BIRTH.
- The Idaho driver license number may be a nine-digit, alpha-numeric number starting with two alpha characters followed by six numerical characters and ending with one alpha character. Previous Idaho license numbers began with 910, 920, or 940 assigned by the sheriffs’ office, or a social security number.
A driver license record and supporting document packet may also be requested for a $14.00 fee. Requesters need to specify what documents are needed. If you need a certified driver packet, the written request must include the date of incident and a $28.00 fee.

If Found Guilty
- Your driver’s license will be suspended for the duration determined by the court.
- You must pay a reinstatement fee of $285 to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD).
- You are required to maintain an SR-22 insurance policy for three years, beginning at the conclusion of your suspension period.
- The court may grant a Restricted Driving Permit during your DUI suspension. You must formally request this permit from the court.
- The court may impose the requirement of an ignition interlock device as part of your sentencing.
If Found Not Guilty
- The ALS suspension remains in effect, and you must fulfill all ALS requirements to reinstate your driving privileges.
Refusal to Submit to Testing
Refusing to submit to testing results in a court-ordered suspension of driving privileges. The consequences of refusal are as follows:
- First Refusal: A one-year suspension with no eligibility for a Restricted Driving Permit.
- Second Refusal (within ten years): A two-year suspension with no eligibility for a Restricted Driving Permit.
To reinstate driving privileges following a refusal, a reinstatement fee of $245 must be paid.
Administrative License Suspension (ALS)
An Administrative License Suspension (ALS) is a civil process managed by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) that occurs after a failed evidentiary test. When you were cited, law enforcement provided you with a goldenrod copy of a document titled “Notice of Suspension for Failure of Evidentiary Testing.” It is important to review this document thoroughly, front and back.
If you wish to contest the ALS, you must request a hearing within seven (7) days of the Date of Service listed on the front of the form. Detailed hearing instructions can be found on the back of the notice.
Suspension Timeline
- 90-Day Suspension: Begins 30 days after the date indicated on the document.

- ALS Reinstatement Fee: $245.00 (must be paid before ITD can issue a Restricted Driving Permit or reinstate your driver’s license)

Defensive Driving Courses
You can complete an approved accident prevention course for a 3-point reduction off your license and/or an insurance discount.
Costs for defensive driving/accident prevention courses are set by the provider and can vary widely. Tuition can range from around $18 to $60, and in some cases the initial tuition fee may not include the cost of a certificate.
* Citations must be paid prior to completing Defensive Driving Course to be approved for the 3-point reduction. ** Traffic class completion certificates are recognized by the state of Idaho for Idaho-licensed drivers only.

Ignition Interlock
An ignition interlock is an instrument designed to measure the BAC (breath alcohol concentration) of an individual, equipped with a camera and prevents a motorized vehicle from starting when the BAC is greater than or equal to .025.
The Ignition Interlock Manufacturers listed have been certified by the Idaho Transportation Department to meet the standards set forth by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for Model Specifications for Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices (BAIIDS). If you are required to have an ignition interlock it is suggested that individuals contact each company listed to determine the nearest service center, cost, availability, and appointment requirements. These manufacturers are located outside of Idaho, however, they have service centers in various Idaho locations. ITD does not install ignition interlocks, cannot recommend a company, or provide the nearest installation center.
