Traffic shift at SH-16 and SH-44 will effect morning commutes.

The Idaho Transportation Department will shift traffic along State Highway 44 between Short Road and Moyle Avenue starting Tuesday night, May 26, through Friday night, May 29.

Work will take place each night between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. with flaggers directing traffic. The speed limit will be reduced during this time.

The final traffic configuration will be in place Saturday morning, May 30, and remain through late summer. Once the shift moves traffic from the center lanes, crews will rebuild the center of SH-44. For more information on the traffic shift configuration, view this video.

“ITD asks motorist to be patient during this traffic shift, as it will take all week for crews to relocate signals, barrier and restripe,” Resident Engineer Styles Salek said. “We believe this new traffic configuration will improve the traffic flow through the intersection.”

During this time, motorists can expect:

  • Crews will be working in the center of SH-44.
  • Westbound SH-44 will be reduced to one through lane near Short Road.
  • A free-running right turn lane will be provided for westbound SH-44 traffic turning north onto SH-16.
  • The left turn at Moyle Avenue for SH-44 eastbound will be shifted to the north side of the work zone.

The State Highway 16 and SH-44 Interchange will provide access from SH-44 to SH-16, while allowing SH-16 to flow freely over SH-44. This interchange is part of the long-term vision for SH-16 and will be finished next year. When complete, SH-16 will be a limited-access freeway between I-84 and SH-44. Motorists will use interchanges to enter or exit the highway at I-84, Franklin Road, Ustick Road, US-20/26 and SH-44. Motorists are encouraged to text HIGHWAY16 to 1-866-483-8422 for email or text alerts. For maps and details about the project, please visit itd.idaho.gov/project/sh16construction.
