North Idaho Bridge Repairs

Ongoing overview of the various bridge repair projects scheduled annually across North Idaho to ensure safety and continued service to the traveling public for years to come.

Overview

Annual bridge maintenance and repairs ensure North Idaho bridges remain in good condition to serve the traveling public year after year.

Annual Bridge Repair and Maintenance Projects

Every year, the Idaho Transportation Department carries out a bridge repair program focused on maintaining and preserving the nearly 300 bridges that support the state highway system across North Idaho. These structures range from large water crossings and interstate overpasses to pedestrian bridges and shorter-span structures such as large culverts.

Bridge repair projects can include activities such as replacing bridge joints, paving, sealing bridge decks, painting and making structural repairs to help preserve bridges and extend their service life. These repairs address the normal wear and aging that occurs over time as bridges are exposed to traffic, weather and water year-round. Some repairs also take place below the bridge deck, including work on foundations and supports exposed to water and changing conditions.

While this work takes place annually across the district, the locations and scope of repairs vary from year to year based on the condition and needs of individual structures.

2026 Bridge Repairs

This year’s annual bridge repair maintenance projects can be classified into three categories: Long duration work zones, short duration daytime work zones, and short duration nighttime work zones.

LONG DURATION WORK ZONE:

Work will be completed over several weeks or months, requiring traffic to be shifted entirely off the bridge as crews complete maintenance and repairs.

Work will be performed primarily during daylight hours and will take scheduled breaks over major summer holidays including Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends.

Drivers should expect traffic shifts, lane reductions, reduced speed limits and potential detours at on- and off-ramps through the work zones for the duration of each project. Intermittent on and off ramps near these bridges may also be affected by construction and will require drivers to take a detour. Digital message signs will be posted in advance of all closures with posted detour routes.

SHORT DURATION DAYTIME WORK ZONE:

Crews will move between numerous locations throughout the district through spring and summer as part of this year’s short-duration bridge repair program.

Work at each site is expected to take between 1 and 3 days before crews move on to the next location. Because the work is mobile in nature, drivers may see temporary traffic impacts at different locations as the season progresses.

Drivers may encounter traffic control devices, lane reductions or restrictions, reduced speed limits and/or flagging through each of these short-duration work zones.

SHORT DURATION NIGHTTIME WORK ZONE:

Night work for annual bridge repair and maintenance in 2026 is reserved for projects affecting bridges on Interstate 90 and will be active from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Much like the short duration daytime projects, these will move between various locations on the interstate and last for 1 to 3 nights while crews complete their work.

Drivers should expect interstate traffic to be reduced to a single lane, with reduced speeds through the active work zone areas overnight.

ITD will begin its annual bridge repair program across North Idaho following Memorial Day weekend, with work continuing through the spring and summer across the region. The map below shows the approximate locations of these bridges set for repair and the type of work zone needed for each project. Because scheduling will depend on contractor phasing, weather and other operational needs, specific work dates are not set at individual locations. Through the summer construction season drivers should expect intermittent lane restrictions, reduced speeds and short-term traffic impacts at these various locations across the region as work progresses.
