Overview
The ‘A’ Canal Bridges are located on Interstate 84 near milepost 214. The two bridges allow the four lanes of I-84 to cross over the “Lateral A Canal” and its access roads.
Built in 1961, the bridges are more than 60 years old. Because of their age, they need to be replaced. Constructing new bridges is a step toward updating the corridor to meet current and future traffic demands. ITD remains focused on improving safety, mobility, and economic opportunity for all users of these important agricultural and industrial routes as the Magic Valley continues to grow.
What’s happening
ITD anticipates construction to begin in late 2027 or early 2028. ITD will work closely with agricultural and industrial businesses and other commuters during the design phase to minimize construction impacts.
The design plans will allow ITD to:
- Replace the two existing bridges with two new, wider bridges.
- Provide new, smoother driving surface and improved guardrails.
- Rebuild approaches on both ends of the bridges.
The new bridges will include larger shoulders, providing more space for emergency services and a secure area for any disabled or damaged vehicles to pull over. This prevents lane closures during future repair projects, reduces the risk of rear-end collisions, and increases driver comfort. The new westbound bridge will be wide enough to accommodate a third lane of traffic when required in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Idaho Transportation Department is replacing two aging bridges on Interstate-84 over the Lateral ‘A’ Canal in Minidoka County. Replacing the bridges will provide safer travel for drivers, freight, and emergency responders and improve mobility for the Magic Valley.
Built in 1961, the bridges are more than 60 years old and no longer meet modern safety standards. Replacing them will provide safer shoulders on the sides in case of emergencies. The new bridges will meet current and future traffic demands and improve safety for motorists.
Construction is scheduled for fall/winter 2027 and will last approximately two years.
Construction will be staged to allow two lanes of traffic to continue in each direction on I-84. Traffic will be shifted during various phases.
The new bridges will add larger shoulders, providing more space for emergency services and a secure area for any disabled or damaged vehicles to pull over. This can prevent lane closures during future repair projects, reduce the risk of rear-end collisions, and increase driver comfort.
Construction of the bridges will take approximately two years. To keep traffic flowing and the interstate open, work is done in segments, or two lanes at a time, lengthening the project timeline. Additionally, paving and concrete work can only occur during warmer months and favorable weather conditions.
Construction of the new bridges will not alter canal operations, and the existing water flow will not change.
The replacement of the bridges is anticipated to cost around $40 million and is fully funded by Federal dollars.
