SH-53 Bruss Road to Latah Street

Additional turn lanes and a reconstructed roadway base will improve safety and mobility throughout the corridor.

This project was previously funded for construction in 2030. As a result of recent changes in transportation funding, this project is recommended to have its funding removed to prioritize other projects necessary to the operation and preservation of the transportation network.

Comments will be accepted July 1-31 on this project and others in the seven-year plan as part of an annual comment period.

Overview

Improving this section of State Highway 53 will provide consistency between previously expanded segments of the corridor, including Sylte Road to Latah Street in Rathdrum and areas near the Pleasant View Interchange.
Planned improvements include a continuous center turn lane, allowing drivers to turn off the highway without impeding through traffic, and right-turn lanes at select intersections, to be determined through further analysis of crash data and turning movements.

This project is part of a broader, phased approach to improving the SH-53 corridor, which was informed by public input gathered during a 2020 online open house focused on long-term safety, access, and traffic needs.
