Overview
Construction is underway throughout the State Highway 16 corridor. Follow this website for updates about ITD’s work in each location. Upon completion of the entire corridor in 2027, this limited-access highway extension will run north to south between SH-44 and I-84.
The Idaho Transportation Department is constructing the extension of State Highway 16.
SH-16 will improve regional mobility, provide access to I-84 in the rapidly growing central Treasure Valley, and improve commutes for thousands of motorists. Upon completion, this limited-access highway extension will run from north to south between SH-44 and I-84.
The entire corridor is on track to open in 2027.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The SH-16 extension will be a limited-access highway. Access on and off the highway will be limited to a few major locations. This will allow traffic on SH-16 to continue moving without encountering numerous driveways and side streets, greatly improving traffic flow.
CURRENT WORK

ITD is building a new highway with two lanes in both directions, a center median barrier and 10-foot shoulders. The highway will be elevated between 5 and 20 feet off the ground. Motorists will use freeway interchanges to enter or exit SH-16 at I-84, Franklin Road, Ustick Road, US-20/26 and SH-44.
Westbound I-84 Closures between Garrity (Exit 38) and Ten Mile (Exit 42) Interchanges
WHAT TO EXPECT: Thursday, Jan. 22 and Monday, Jan. 26
- Westbound I-84 will be fully closed between Garrity (Exit 38) and Ten Mile (Exit 42) interchanges.
- Closures will take place each night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Anticipated Construction Impacts
- Occasional closures or delays on roads in the project area.
- Some work will be scheduled at night and will require nighttime noise and lighting.
- Vehicle traffic will increase in the area during construction.
- Work will be noisy at times.
- Access to businesses, residential areas and irrigation will remain open.
- Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone when necessary.
- Utility companies may interrupt traffic when relocating infrastructure.

Funding
Current construction is funded in part with Transportation Expansion and Congestion Mitigation (TECM) funds as part of Governor Little’s Leading Idaho TECM Program. The program allows ITD to accelerate project timelines to address rapid growth and build critical infrastructure today that would otherwise take many years to fund and build.

Other projects in the area
State Highway 16 is one of many infrastructure projects in the central Treasure Valley. ITD and other agencies are working together to meet the needs of this growing area.
