Overview
This project will rehabilitate US-30 through Soda Springs and add a turn lane for the Sherriff’s office. A mill and inlay will be done between the east city limits and 3rd Street East. The reconstruction of the roadway will be between 3rd Street East and the west city limits. Construction is scheduled to conclude in the fall of 2026.
Construction underway
The Idaho Transportation Department has begun work on U.S. Highway 30 through Soda Springs, with lane closures expected to start April 30.
This week traffic control is being placed in preparation for full construction beginning next week. The $13 million project will rebuild US-30 through town. In addition, a turn lane will be added to improve access to the Caribou County Sherriff’s Office. During construction the city will also be replacing utilities.
The roadway will be constructed in phases to allow continuous use without need of a detour. Phase 1 will be replacing utilities on the eastbound side of US-30. Phase 2 will be replacing utilities on the westbound. Phase 3 will lay asphalt on the westbound side. Phase 4 will pave the eastbound side. Phase 5 will add another layer of asphalt on the westbound side.
Drivers should expect lane reductions in town during the reconstruction. Once resurfacing starts on July 6, a pilot car will guide traffic on the east end of town past the intersection of US-30 and South 3rd Street. ITD will maintain access to businesses and residences during construction. The project is expected to be completed this fall.
The road has needed multiple patches in recent years. This project will address the underlying causes of the road’s deterioration. US-30 will not only be smoother but will also require less construction in the coming years.
East City Limit to West City Limit

This project is reconstructing a portion of US-30 through Soda Springs. In addition, a new turn lane will be placed in front of the Sherriff’s office to allow for safer turns into the office.
What safety improvements will be made? – A turn lane will be extended to accommodate left turns into the Sheriff’s office. This will prevent stopped cars in the lane of travel.
How will this affect business access? – The project will be phased to minimize impacts to businesses. We expect disruptions to last a few days. During construction, access to businesses will be maintained.
What about the sidewalk ramps at the intersection of US-30 and 3rd Street East? – ITD will be placing ADA ramps at all four corners of the intersection.
Where will the mill and inlay portion of the project be done? – The mill and inlay will be done between the east city limits and 3rd Street East.
Where will the reconstruction of the roadway be done? – The reconstruction of the roadway will be between 3rd Street East and the west city limits.
What about the 4th of July parade? – ITD is working closely with the city to ensure a safe route will be available for the parade.
Will sidewalks and curbs be replaced? – This project does not include replacing sidewalks and curbs.
How long will the water and sewer disruptions last? – Where required, the contractor will provide temporary bypass to maintain uninterrupted utility access to the existing users.
