This project was previously funded for construction in 2030. As a result of recent changes in transportation funding, this project has had its funding removed to prioritize other projects necessary to the operation and preservation of the transportation network.
Overview
The Idaho Transportation Department is evaluating potential solutions for the future of the East Kooskia Bridge crossing over the Clearwater River. The Idaho Transportation Department is currently working through planning and alternatives analysis phase for the bridge. This work will help ITD identify a preferred alternative for the future of the crossing while considering transportation needs.
Background
The East Kooskia Bridge was built in 1935 and carries traffic across the Clearwater River. As the structure continues to age, ITD closely monitors its condition and adjusts weight restrictions as necessary.
Future planning
ITD is currently evaluating several alternatives for the future of the East Kooskia Bridge. No preferred alternative has been selected.
Replacement alternatives are currently estimated to cost approximately $40 million. Construction is not currently funded.
Maintaining the bridge
The bridge is an aging structure, and inspections have identified continued deterioration of its steel components. ITD regularly inspects the bridge and uses engineering analysis to determine how much weight it can safely carry.
On Sept. 11, 2026, ITD reduced the bridge’s weight restriction to 8 tons gross vehicle weight for commercial freight traffic based on its current condition and carrying capacity.
While long-term planning continues, ITD is actively managing the East Kooskia Bridge.

Heavy commercial vehicles over 8 tons must use the SH-13 Bridge, approximately one mile west.

Looking ahead
ITD will continue evaluating potential solutions for the crossing and advancing the planning process and evaluating alternatives. The existing bridge will continue to be inspected and managed separately as this work progresses. Significant changes to the existing bridge will be communicated directly to the community and affected highway users.
