US-12 Saddle Camp to Post Office Creek

Widening four miles of US-12 will increase safety on this narrow, winding route.

Overview

The US-12 Saddle Camp Road to Post Office Creek project will widen roadway shoulders from milepost 140 to 144. This will be accomplished by constructing a shoulder notch, installing retaining walls, and performing minor rock excavation. In addition, all guardrail, signs and pipe culverts will be upgraded to modern standards.

Engineered Solutions

Constructing a shoulder notch in order to widen this narrow stretch of US-12 is an economical method with a small environmental footprint for widening the roadway. Minor rock excavation will occur and then retaining walls installed to provide safer passage for motorists between Fleming and the top of Lolo Pass in Idaho County.

Future Outlook

This project is currently in design phase, with the input of recreationists, local maintenance crews, Forest Service, and Tribal partners. Construction is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2029.
