Overview
Design is underway for the installation of traffic signal bridges at both 45th and 55th along US-26 between Idaho Falls and Ririe that will help increase safety on this main route to Jackson Hole.
The Idaho Transportation Department is designing improvements to the intersections of US-26 and 45th Avenue, as well as US-26 and 55th. This project is expected to significantly improve safety between Idaho Falls and Ririe by adding signal bridges, similar to the one now operating at the intersection of Holmes and Anderson, at each of these intersections. Both points are along the primary route for commuters from the east side of the state into Idaho Falls. US-26 is also a main access to Teton Valley and Jackson Hole. The project is funded to be constructed in 2030.

Safety and Mobility Improvement
At each intersection a signal will be installed. It will be placed on a signal bridge (see example below at Anderson & Holmes). Current plans do not include a widening of the road or changing of road geometry.
All infrastructure will fit within existing right of way. Impacts to traffic will be minimal during the construction phase of the project.
- Advanced warning lights will be at both intersections where it is both high speed and a high agricultural presence
- Clearance distance from asphalt to bottom of signal bridge: 17′ 6″
- Signal bridges will be 110′ long

Community Involvement
A public meeting for this project was held in November of 2023 both in-person and online. ITD received 43 comments, indicating strong support for traffic signals at the intersections of 45th and 55th with US-26. Common responses included recommending the addition of a center turn lane and reducing the speed limit on US-26.
