Update Fall 2026
This project was delayed when plans had to undergo multiple revisions to accommodate area business owners and ensure effective, safe mobility. Each change resulted in time needed for further environmental approval. With all factors now complete, this project will request bids for construction by the end of this year and construction begin in spring of 2027. ITD has analyzed needed improvements to the intersection of US-26 (Yellowstone Highway) and 25th East (Hitt Road) in Idaho Falls, Bonneville County. In addition to this intersection, analysis was also done on the intersections of Hitt Road and E. Iona Road, and US-26 (Yellowstone Highway) and E. Iona Road, as well as potential impacts to traffic at other nearby intersections.
Safety
This project will improve the safety and capacity of the intersection by:
- Replacing the traffic signals
- Widening Hitt Road from two lanes to up to five lanes, with an additional two lanes at the intersection
- Replacing the roundabout with a traffic signal at the intersection of Iona Road and Hitt Road
- Creating three lanes on Iona Road
- Adding sidewalks and lighting to improve pedestrian safety while traversing this area
Community Input
Public meetings were held in September 2021, April 2022 and January 2023 regarding this project and the potential relinquishment of surrounding sections of US-26 through the future. Three alternatives were originally shared for the US-26 and Hitt Road intersection, with the final design having been chosen with the help of positive public feedback. ITD has been working with Bonneville County, area business owners and other partners as this project has progressed since those meetings.
Advancing Safety: Iona Road
Altering the intersection of US-26 and Iona Road to allow right-turn only movement was always a part of the Hiit Road improvement project. Following multiple severe crashes on US-26 (Yellowstone) through 2026, and in cooperation with Bonneville County, the decision was made to advance this change immediately. Temporary median barriers were placed in August and outreach conducted to re-route vehicles and encourage the use of traffic signals at both Hitt Road and Woodruff Avenue. These barriers and signage will become more permanent as part of construction in 2027.
