Work zone driving tips
- Slow down while traveling through work zones, paying close attention to signs and signals.
- Pay close attention to road workers and flaggers – give them extra room, always slow when approaching them, and be prepared to stop if necessary.
- Be aware of the other vehicles around you, including other cars and commercial vehicles that have larger blind spots and longer stopping distances.
- Rear-end crashes are common in work zones – obey all speeds, avoid distractions, and maintain extra space between your vehicle and the one in front of you at all times.
- Wear your seatbelt. While you may be driving carefully you can’t control the behavior of other drivers.

Learn more about staying safe in Work Zones
ITD wants to help Idahoans learn about work zones and become better drivers by presenting the Cone Zone to schools, groups, and organizations.
Prepare for the Cone Zone
ITD maintenance workers visit your group and share their experiences working on the roads. The Cone Zone aims to teach drivers about work zone safety with a short presentation and tour of some ITD equipment used in construction (equipment varies based on availability). It’s a way to connect drivers directly with the people and equipment that keep the roads safe and reduce the number of crashes in work zones.
Request a Cone Zone safety presentation
Fill out a presentation request form and an employee will be in touch within five days to schedule a presentation.
The Cone Zone is ITD’s work zone safety outreach program. Work zones can pose a danger to drivers and to workers, especially if drivers are not paying attention. What many people fail to recognize is most people killed in work zone crashes are drivers and passengers.
