Update: Spring 2025
New intersection design is now in final review. Construction on improvements at this busy intersection could begin as early as 2026.
Overview
Design work on the Hitt Road intersection in Idaho Falls is under final review and motorists can expect to see construction that will improve safety and mobility begin as early as 2026.
Idaho Falls
ITD has analyzed needed improvements to the intersection of US-26 (Yellowstone Highway) and 25th East (Hitt Road) in Bonneville County. In addition to this intersection, analysis was also done on the intersections of Hitt Road and E. Iona Road, and US-26 (Yellowstone Highway) and E. Iona Road, as well as potential impacts to traffic at other nearby intersections.

Safety
This project will improve the safety and capacity of the intersection by:
- Replacing the traffic signals
- Widening Hitt Road from two lanes to up to five lanes, with an additional two lanes at the intersection
- Replacing the roundabout with a traffic signal at the intersection of Iona Road and Hitt Road
- Creating three lanes on Iona Road
- Adding sidewalks and lighting to improve pedestrian safety while traversing this area
Community Input

A public hearing concerning the relinquishment of US-26 from Woodruff Avenue to Ammon Road following this improvement project at the intersection of US-26 and Hitt Road was held in January of 2023. Multiple follow-up meetings between ITD, Bonneville County and others were held in the spring of 2023 and 2024.
Prior to that relinquishment hearing, a public meeting detailing and seeking input on improvements at this intersection was held in September of 2021.
