ITD is responsible for operating and maintaining an integrated network of over 12,400 centerline miles of highways and roads, 1,850 bridges, 2,523 miles of Idaho Byways, and 32 state backcountry airstrips. The state highway system includes 35 rest areas and 12 fixed ports of entry. The Division of Motor Vehicles registers more than two million vehicles and trailers and is responsible for the credentials of more than a million drivers.

The Idaho Transportation Board is “vested with authority, control, supervision and administration of the department” per Idaho Code Title 40, Chapter 3. The Board establishes state transportation policy and guides the planning, development and management of a transportation network that is safe, efficient and enhances Idaho’s economy and quality of life. ITD’s executive leadership team oversees daily operations of the agency, including the Division of Highways, the Division of Motor Vehicles, the Division of Aeronautics and six transportation districts across the state. Each transportation district is led by a District Engineer. There are 1,645 employees at ITD.
