More than $22 million in federal grant funding is now available from the Idaho Transportation Department’s Public Transportation office (ITD-PT) for rural transit service providers in Idaho. Grant applications will be accepted September 1 – October 31, 2021.
Local government authorities, public agencies, private nonprofit organizations, and public transportation operators who receive funding indirectly through an eligible recipient are all encouraged to apply.
ITD-PT receives a federal appropriation from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to award to transit providers every two years. This congressional award funding is available for operating and capital projects to support rural public transportation needs and services in 2022 – 2024. In a largely rural state, there are public transportation services in 43 of the 44 counties.
Grants are available through the following four funding programs:
- FTA 5310: Enhanced Mobility of Seniors & Individuals with Disabilities
- FTA 5311: Rural Formula
- FTA 5339: Bus and Bus Facilities
- Vehicle Investment Program

The Idaho Transportation Department’s Public Transportation Advisory Council (PTAC) will have its second meeting of 2021 on Tuesday, June 15. The meeting will be held online via Webex from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public.
PTAC was created in Idaho code 40-514 to advise ITD on issues and policies regarding public transportation in Idaho. The council is made up of six members representing each of the ITD districts, and participates in planning activities, identifying transportation needs, and promoting coordinated transportation systems.
Meeting topics encompass ITD’s mission of Your Safety, Your Mobility, Your Economic Opportunity, as it relates to public transportation and the funding programs available to transit providers and stakeholders across Idaho.

The Idaho Transportation Department’s Interagency Working Group for Public Transportation (IWG) will hold its first meeting of 2021 on Wednesday, March 10. The meeting will take place online via Webex from 1 – 3 p.m.
Subsequent IWG meetings are scheduled for June 22, September 28, and December 14 online.
The IWG advises and assists ITD in analyzing public transportation needs, identifying areas for coordination, and developing strategies for eliminating procedural and regulatory barriers to coordination at the state level. The group is made up of representatives from more than 10 different Idaho state agencies.

This is a pivotal and challenging time in the world of public transportation in Idaho. Citizens have the opportunity to help shape what Idaho’s transit future will look like!
The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is seeking representatives for District 1 and District 4 to serve on the Public Transportation Advisory Council (PTAC).
The individual selected for District 1 will represent Bonner, Boundary, Shoshone, Kootenai, and Benewah counties. The individual selected for District 4 will represent Blaine, Camas, Lincoln, Twin Falls, Jerome, Gooding, Cassia, and Minidoka counties.
The PTAC was created to advise the ITD Board on issues related to public transportation in Idaho. It is composed of six members, one representing each of ITD’s administrative districts.

A 30-day public comment period on the candidates will occur starting shortly thereafter.
